권사님에 대한 추억

며칠 전 김 박사님께서 보내 주신 어머님 여귀옥 여사님의 소천과 고별예배에 대한 편지를 받고 잉거가르드와 저는 진심으로 감동을 받았습니다. 소천 하실 당시의 상황과 어머님께서 마치 김 박사님께 직접 부활의 영광과 승리에 대하여 말씀하신 것과 같아 새로운 소망으로 기쁜 마음이 들었다는 내용을 상세하게 써주셔서 감사드립니다.

여귀옥 여사님은 어두움과 맞서 싸우고 승리하신 기도의 용사셨으며, 그 무엇에도 두려워하지 않고 담대하게 예수님에 대하여 증거하신 분이셨습니다. 알코올과 약물에 중독 되어 있던 많은 사람들이 어머님으로 인하여 하나님 앞으로 돌아와 새 생명을 누리게 되었을 뿐 아니라 어머님께서 몸담고 계시던 절제회 사역을 도와 한국의 영적 도덕적 정결함을 위한 선한 싸움에 동참하였습니다. 잉거가르드와 저는 그 무엇보다도 어머님께서 맺으신 가장 큰 열매는 바로 하나님을 경외하며 그 분께 삶을 헌신하는 자녀들을 양육하신 점이라고 생각됩니다. 그리고 물론 자녀분들과 또 손자세대에게까지 하나님 안에서 거하는 법을 성령님의 도우심으로 전하셨다는 사실입니다.

김영훈 회장님 내외분의 세 아이들이 얼마나 슬퍼하였는지에 대하여 쓰신 부분이 저희 마음에 많이 와 닿았습니다. 저희도 그 세 아이를 잘 알고 있고 사랑하고 있기에 아이들의 마음이 어떤지 느껴집니다. 2004년 1월 알렌홀에서 있었던 저의 출판 기념회에서 많은 어른들 앞에서 노래를 불렀던 의진이를 마지막으로 본 기억이 떠오르네요.

아쉽게도 저희가 2003년 한국을 방문했을 당시에는 여귀옥 여사님이 편찮으셔서 직접 뵐 기회가 없었습니다만, 저희가 연세대학교에 가게 된 배경에는 어머님께서 중요한 역할을 하셨음을 잘 알고 있습니다. 어머님께서는 용재 재단의 의장자리에 연대캠퍼스에 영적인 부흥을 몰고 올 사람이 오기를 간절히 원하셨고, 박사님과 어머님의 기도로 인하여 제가 오게 된 것을 잘 알고 있습니다.

우리가 어머님을 뵙지는 못하였지만, 박사님께서 영어로 번역하신 “아름다운 추억”을 통하여 어머님과 박사님의 아름다운 가정에 대하여 생생하게 알 수 있었습니다. 지금도 이 책은 저의 타자기 옆에 있으며, 저는 어머님과 박사님 남매 분들의 사진과 하나님의 멋진 계획을 드러낸 “Beautiful Memories(아름다운 추억)”를 읽는 것을 즐겨 하고 있습니다.

어머님의 장례예배에 1000명이 넘는 조문객들께서 오셨음을 알려주셨습니다만, 어머님의 생애 마지막에는 거의 활동을 안 하셨다는 점을 미루어 보아 정말 대단한 일이라고 하지 않을 수 없습니다. 그 많은 분들은 어머님께서 이전에 하신 활동을 기억하고 계심이 분명하며, 어머님을 한번이라도 만나본 사람들은 마음에 강한 인상을 가졌을 것입니다.

하나님께서 김영훈 회장님께 히브리서 12:1 말씀을 통하여 어머님께서 이제는 앞에 있는 경주를 다 경주하시고 구름과 같이 허다한 증인들과 함께 하신다는 확신을 주셨다는 사실에 참 감사했습니다. 이 세상에서는 헤어지더라도 우리가 나중에 하나님의 나라에서 다시 만날 수 있다는 사실이 얼마나 큰 위로가 되는지 모릅니다.

박사님의 가정은 이미 하나님을 이 세상에 널리 알리기 위하여 많은 사역을 하셨습니다. 이제는 승리와 부활의 확신을 보여줌이 많은 이들에게 간증이 될 줄로 믿습니다. 박사님께서 보내주신 편지 자체가 간증이며, 저희 부부는 그 편지를 소중하게 가슴에 품고 있을 것입니다.

하나님 안에서 자매 된 김 박사님! 저희의 진심 어린 애도를 가족들에게 전해주시기 바랍니다. 특별히 저희가 뵌 적 있는 김영주 부회장님, 김영훈 회장님 내외분과 세 아이들에게 전해주십시오. 그 아이들이 사별의 아픔으로 지금은 울고 있는 게 자연스럽다고 생각됩니다. 저희도 박사님과 함께 슬퍼하며, 동시에 박사님의 부활의 영광과 기쁨에 대한 감사에 같이 감사하고 있습니다.

요한계시록 14:13 말씀으로 위로하고자 합니다.
"또 내가 들으니 하늘에서 음성이 나서 가로되 기록하라 자금 이후로 주 안에서 죽는 자들은 복이 있도다 하시매 성령이 가라사대 그러하다 저희 수고를 그치고 쉬리니 이는 저희의 행한 일이 따름이라 하시더라."

부활하신 예수님 안에서 사랑을 전합니다.

Dear Jung-Joo!

Ingegaerd and I are deeply moved by your account of your dear mother's, Mrs. Kwi Ok Yeu, departure and funeral some days ago. Thank you so much for taking your time to write so much in detail about the circumstances under which in your presence she was called by her Lord, and how you felt her speaking so joyfully to your heart about her spiritual victory and forthcoming resurrection.

She was, indeed, a great warrior in God's fight against the prince of darkness, whom she conquered many times through her ardent prayer and her fearless witness to Jesus Christ. Many people addicted to alcohol and drugs have found a new life in Him and joined her crusades in the Korean and international Temperance Union to rescue other sinners as well and to work for a spiritual and ethical cleansing of the Korean nation. But her greatest achievement, we believe, was her bringing u five children in the fear of the Lord and in readiness to dedicate their lives to His service. In this she was, of course, greatly assisted by the Holy Spirit who took His abode in your hearts and those of the following generation of grandchildren.
It is really touching to read your description how emotionally David's and Ester's three children reacted, which is not difficult to imagine since we have got to know them so well and to love them. Little Eui Jin was the last one of them whom I saw in connection with my book presentation party in November 2004 in Allen Hall, where she even played an active role by singing beautifully in front of many adults!

Unfortunately we never had an occasion to meet your mom personally, since she was already very ailing when we arrived in Seoul in March 2003. We were very much aware that she had an important part in bringing us to Yonsei University, because it was her deep desire that the Yong Jae Chair should be occupied by somebody with a thrust for the spiritual renewal of the Campus, and her ardent prayers together with yours contributed much to the selection of my person. Although we did not see her in the flesh, we still received a clear and vivid picture of her by reading her wonderful family story "Beautiful Memories" which you translated into English. Even now the book is lying beside my type writer, and I enjoy looking at the beautiful photographs of her and her children and reading the headlines of the chapters, which each one gives a vivid testimony of her joy to see her children develop according to God's master plan with them!

You record that more than 1000 people attended her funeral, which is marvellous since she had completely withdrawn from public life during the final years of her life. But all of them and even more people remembered her from what she had accomplished during her earlier years, and once meeting such a sanctified personality surely would leave a deep impression upon their minds.

We are glad to read that the Lord drew David's attention to Hebrews 12:1 and assured you all that your mother has now been lifted up to join the cloud of witnesses surrounding the saints still on earth to complete their spiritual race. What a comfort to know that those who departed in Christ have not really left us but that their still united with us in the one great concern that His Kingdom will grow on earth already now and once come in great power and glory!

Your family has served the Lord in many different ways to make Him known to a society which so urgently needs Him. Now your way of showing assurance of victory and resurrection will also be a convincing testimony to many. Your present letter, too, is such a testimony which we shall treasure in our hearts.

Now, our dear sister in Christ Jung-Joo: Please convey our sincere condolence to all members of your family, especially those whom we have met personally : To your sister Young-Joo, your brother Younghoon and his wife Ester and their three lovely children. It is quite natural when they are weeping now because of their bereavement. We are mourning with you, at the same time as we share your thankfulness for this completed life and your assurance that you will be reunited with her in the life to come. Let us console you with the word from Revelation 14:13

"Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. Yes, says the Spirit, they shall rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them."
